So you've been waking up with headaches in the morning?
Lately, we've been seeing more and more patients coming in with mysterious jaw aches, tension headaches, or sensitive teeth that seem to have no clear cause. When we dig a little deeper, one common thread starts to appear: stress.
Life is heavy right now. Whether it's the rising cost of living, the pressure of parenthood, what's happening globally, or just that mental load we all carry, stress shows up in the body in sneaky ways. And one of the most common? Grinding, clenching, or tapping your teeth in your sleep. Often, without even realising it.
What is teeth grinding (bruxism) — and why does it matter?
Grinding your teeth is your body’s unconscious way of trying to cope with stress. It usually happens while you’re asleep or during moments of concentration. Over time, this repeated pressure can lead to something called Cracked Tooth Syndrome, where a tooth develops a small fracture that causes pain when you bite or chew.
The tricky part? You might not notice anything until it’s too late.
Here are a few early signs to watch out for:
Waking up with headaches or a sore jaw
Feeling like your teeth are “tight” or sensitive
Neck and shoulder tension
Clicking or locking in your jaw
Teeth that are wearing down or chipping
If these sound familiar, you’re not alone — and it’s worth investigating before things get worse.
What happens if grinding isn’t treated?
Unchecked grinding can put immense pressure on your teeth. That can lead to:
Cracked teeth, sometimes right down to the nerve
Root canals or even tooth removal if the crack is too deep
Gum recession or long-term damage to the jaw joint (TMJ)
Chronic pain or tension headaches
Not exactly the kind of “stress relief” you were looking for, right?
How can we help stop it?
Toowoomba Dental offers a few different approaches depending on what works best for you.
1. Custom-made night guards
Unlike the boil-and-bite ones from the chemist, these are professionally made to fit your exact bite. They're comfortable to wear and designed to protect your teeth without affecting your sleep.
2. TMJ massage therapy
Our dentists are trained to gently work on the muscles around your jaw (known as the temporomandibular joint). This can help relieve tension, improve mobility, and reduce grinding.
3. Neuromuscular relaxing treatments
For people who clench or grind with a lot of force, we offer a treatment that relaxes the overworked jaw muscles. It doesn’t stop movement entirely, but it reduces the intensity so your teeth aren’t bearing the brunt of it.
Many patients are surprised when they realise how much they were clenching — and how much better they feel after addressing it.
Still not sure if you’re grinding your teeth?
We’re here to help you figure it out. A quick check-up can often reveal wear patterns or jaw tension that you might not feel yourself. And from there, we can chat about the best path forward for you.
If you’ve been waking up sore, tired, or just not feeling quite right, don’t ignore it. Sometimes the smallest cracks can cause the biggest issues.
